Dr Sharpe and the influence of fathers on birth outcomes
Dr Gemma Sharpe, Senior Lecturer in Molecular Epidemiology, University of Bristol, speaks about the importance of broadening the field of development origins of health and disease to look at paternal influences, which she believes has been neglected. Paternal health around the time of pregnancy, such as diet, exposure to environmental toxins, and smoking habits are important factors to consider. Furthermore, a male partner’s emotional aptitude and his support of his pregnant partner, is critical for the health and wellbeing of both the mother and child.
